Bi-folding doors and sliding stacker doors are two of the most popular large opening door systems for Melbourne homes. Both create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection — but they work differently, cost differently, and suit different spaces. Here’s everything you need to know to make the right choice.
Bi-fold doors consist of multiple panels hinged together that fold and stack to one or both sides of the opening. When fully open, the panels concertina and sit neatly against the wall — leaving the opening completely unobstructed. They’re operated by a top track (and usually a bottom track for stability on wider systems).
Sliding stacker doors have panels that slide horizontally along a track and stack behind each other (or into a cavity) when open. Unlike bi-folds, each panel moves independently. They can be configured to slide from one side, both sides, or to disappear completely into a wall cavity for a truly seamless look.
| Feature | Bi-Folding Doors | Sliding Stacker Doors |
|---|---|---|
| Opening size | Up to 100% of opening | Typically 50–75% of opening |
| Panel count | 2–8 panels | 2–6 panels |
| Operation effort | Moderate (fold & stack) | Easy (smooth glide) |
| Seal when closed | Very good | Excellent |
| Weather performance | Good | Better (fewer gaps) |
| Aesthetic | Dramatic, architectural | Minimal, seamless |
| Floor track | Usually required | Not required (top-hung) |
| Price range | Higher | Moderate–High |
| Maintenance | Hinges need occasional check | Very low |
Bi-folding doors are the right choice when you want maximum opening and a strong architectural statement. They work best when:
Sliding stacker doors are the better choice when ease of use, weather performance and a truly minimal aesthetic are priorities:
Pricing varies significantly based on size, glass specification and hardware. As a general guide for factory-direct supply and installation:
Both systems increase in cost with width, panel count, glass upgrades (double glazing, Low-E, laminated) and hardware choices. Bi-folds tend to be 10–20% more expensive than equivalent stacker doors due to the more complex hinge and folding hardware.
Both bi-fold and sliding stacker doors are available with double glazed glass. Given Melbourne’s climate and NCC 2022 energy requirements, double glazing is strongly recommended for any large opening door system — it dramatically improves thermal performance and reduces noise from outside.
Both systems can be fitted with retractable fly screens. For bi-folds, a single pleated screen can cover the entire opening. For stackers, individual sliding screens or a Centor integrated system are the cleanest solutions.
Both systems are available with multi-point locking. For maximum security, specify key-lockable multi-point locks on your chosen system — particularly important for ground floor applications.
For most Melbourne homes, sliding stacker doors offer the best combination of performance, ease of use and value. They’re particularly well-suited to the wide openings common in contemporary Melbourne architecture.
Choose bi-folding doors if the dramatic full-open aesthetic is important to you, or if you have a specific space where the folding configuration works best.
The best way to decide is to see both systems in person and discuss your specific opening with an expert.
